A few times each year, the cannons on Kronborg castle fires celebratory rounds. This time, the cannons were firing because the royal Danish queens birthday.

When I get the chance, I pack up my recording equipment and find a sweet spot to record the big booms coming from the 12 pound cannons dating back from the 1760 (Wiki link).

Kronborg is luckily a very public space, and was yesterday, crowded as never before. Lots of children and people in general, waiting for the loud cannon fire.

This FREE downloadable 192K stereo track has some of the usual “wows”, “look at that…” and “is that loud?” in case anyone should doubt that.

If you can live with that, you are perfectly welcome to download the track and use it (Sonic Salutes license agreement still applies to this track!!!)

Recorder: Sounddevices 702

Mics: DPA 4061 low sens

Distance to cannons: 150 Meters infront

Recording sessions info:

All tension creaking, and breaking sounds in this library, were recorded inside a dens pine tree forest in Sweden. Particular for this hidden gem of a location is, that the distance to the nearest bigger road is apx. 10 Km, and further more, the location being surrounded by tall pine trees, makes the chance of any wind very low.

At night, all you can hear is the pulsing rush of blood beating in your own ears. Its so silent, its almost scary.

During the day, an occasional bird or two visits the area, but overall the place is empty for bird wildlife.

Why is this important to know?

Because the wide open area where all the sounds for this library were recorded, is like the biggest Foley recording room on the planet, which makes it really easy to get super clean sounds recorded on location, and excludes the use of any noise reduction in the editorial process.

While recording the tension, creaking and breaking sounds of the ice, was fairly easy. Keeping myself from getting injured during the sessions were difficult.

Ice is slippery. I knew that. But standing on a thin sheet of ice with an average of 5 to 50 Cm of nothing to the rocky bottom beneath it, was a different story.

This “nothing”, however, served as an amplifier of the different sounds. Making the breakups almost glass like, and explosive.

Picture below, shows the special area, and the hundred of different holes with ice on top of them (and a picture taken after the session ended).

This library also includes ice impact sounds. While some were recorded in Sweden, a session was made back in Denmark too. A great lake, which was completely frozen earlier, was beginning to break up into smaller pieces.

This was the perfect opportunity to wear some waders and get out in the water!

These impacts of ice on ice, and ice into ice water, were recorded with a Sennheiser Mkh 416 standing in land, capturing the splashes and more bright sounds, and more interestingly, an Aquarian Audio H2A XLR hydrophone, capturing the underwater sounds. The tracks are a mix of both.

Nearly one year in the making:

This sound effects library started out with some huge sounding recordings on a ferry in a storm, a late night in December 2011.

During the winter and spring of 2012, recordings of moving vehicles (Van on cobblestone stone and van on bumpy road) were made, together with the first test recordings of “objects placed on subwoofer”.

The last recordings, which went into the Shake Rattle And Rumble sfx library, were the “Person shaking” tracks.

Great efforts were put into getting a versatile amount of objects, and even more, getting the right, and different sounding, objects. This was surprisingly challenging, as things sometimes are when you dig into them.

Each session, was great fun, and inspired me to find either more material to shake, or new places and vehicles, which made things vibrate.

The 110 tracks in this library are:

60 individual tracks of “Person shaking objects” (bookshelves, drawers, cabinets, boxes, metal, glass and bottles, baskets, plastic, a laptop and even a hospital bed)

27 individual tracks of “Objects shaking on a subwoofer” (wood, metal, glass, toys, and porcelain)

16 individual tracks of “Van on cobblestone/Bumpy road”

4 individual tracks of “Ferry in high seas” (apx. 9 minutes in all)

3 individual tracks of “Road roller passing house” (which, literally made everything inside the house move)

Video of Road roller passing house: ROADROLLER PASSING HOUSE THE SHAKES

Track list of the complete library can be found here: T R A C K L I S T

All in all, Shake Rattle And Rumble is 2,3 Gb big (Unzipped), and Consists of 110 files, all 96K 24bits.

Recorders used: Soundevices 702, and Protools Hd

Microphones: Sennheiser Mkh 416, DPA 4060′s, and 4061′s

All tracks named and Metadata tagged

Story behind the creation of the SFX Library

Late 2011, I was contacted by sound designer Peter Albrechtsen from Tonemasters/Tonemestrene, who presented me with a new Danish feature called You And Me Forever, which needed a lot of different sound recordings done.

Peter always makes me think differently, when doing recordings for features and documentaries, and has made me a strong believer in recording everything I hear, big and small. He has the ability to use everything I send him, in one way or another. I truly admire him for his very talented approach on sound, and how to use sound as an effective storyteller.

Along alot of atmospheres needed for the feature, Peter asked more specifically for the sound of a building shaking, as it was being torn down by heavy machinery.

One of the end scenes in the movie, had visuals of the characters watching an abandoned building being demolished, as well as a scene where the characters only hear the rumble off screen, so I was in great need of something close to the real thing, as well as the sound of an interior building being shaken without telling what was actually happening.

What to do?

A few days later I was on a big ferry with my family, going to Sweden. Staying near the duty free shop, I suddenly heard what sounded like metal plates, and liqueur bottles vibrating at the same time. Below these sounds, there was a constantly deep frequency rumbling.

As the captain speed up, the ferries engine made the whole interior rumble like it was falling apart. I have been on this small trip many times before, but had never heard the interior sound like this (or maybe I was´nt listening the same way before).

I immediately knew that I had to get in contact with the shipping line who owned the ship, so I could record this.

A week later I was invited to board a late departure (as it would have fewer travelers aboard). The whole day had been quite windy, and as the evening came closer, the wind picked up even more.
Personal shaking:

Later on, I started thinking about shaking things around me by hand, and record this process. I actually thought that this would be as easy as just grabbing a drawer or a metal box, and shake the living out of it. I was very fast proven wrong at this.

Challenge number 1: Shaking an object, without it sounding too unnatural, or “human” is difficult. Keeping a certain rhythm is even more diificult.

Challenge number 2: Not doing the exact same rhythm is very difficult.

Challenge number 3: Shaking an object for more then 30 seconds is REALLY hard (by object number 2 or 3 is was already exhausted) (good workout though!)

Challenge number 4: A lot of objects does not sound very interesting when being shaken

Nevertheless I think I found some interesting objects for my “By-Hand” shaking recordings, and this group is also the biggest in the library with 60 files.

Subwoofer Rattles:

Next up I wanted something completely different sounding, so I went on with the technique of placing metal boxes, toys, plastic, wooden boxes etc. on a subwoofer, and then control the frequency of a sine wave in Kyma, with a Wacom tablet pen. (Thank you Jean-Eduoard Miclot who inspired, showed and explained me the technique). This way I was able to get a more subtle rattle from the things placed on the sub, and the track length could go on forever, without my arms and chest being completely busted.

This meant that the captain had to use even more power to get through the relative small strait. This only made the sounds of the hull even more huge.

The need for these recordings from Peter, inspired me to do a whole sound effects library of nothing but shaking, rattle and rumbling sounds, so I began trying out different methods to get various object to make a sound as if a earthquake was happening.

Besides the ferry recordings, I recorded a van driving on a bumpy dirt road, and cobble stone. By coincidence, I also recorded road rollers outside my studio. They were flattening the road, which literally made everything in the house move!

You can see a video of that right here: ROADROLLER PASSING HOUSE THE SHAKES

What started out as a somewhat smaller camera sound effects recording project, quickly evolved into an obsessive need to find new cameras with different sounding shutters and winders.

Every fleemarket, and camera entusiasts gathering, were thoroughly scanned for more, more more…..

As a fun sidenote, it is worth mentioning, that sellers look quite strangely at a buyer, when the buyer is listening to one camera after another, instead of looking through the finder on the various models for sale.

These Sound effects were recorded from 17 different cameras, all analog, analog reflex cameras, or digital reflex cameras, produced from 1960 to 2010.

From simple clicks and timers, to modern time, lenses focusing, servos and shutter sounds, the sound effects library is packed with alot of goodies.

109 mono wav. files. 127 Mb. All 96/24. (delivered as a ZIP download)

Sounds range from plastic foundries, casting machines, and machinery alarms, to giant textile processing units, and medical equipment manufacturing, cleanrooms and robotics.
All very loud environments. All recordings are several minutes long.

2 out of 4 factories, allowed for a handful of pictures to be taken. Info on the process and specific machinery type, was unfortunately not allowed to be written down or otherwise archived.

This happens due to industrial copyrights, and patents. Copying by competing companies is apparently a big problem.

This summer has been the strangest ever. There hasnt been a regular 2 days straight of sun and temps above 20 degress for the entire month of July. It was supposed to be warm right now. Schools are out, and every child in Denmark has been too since the start of July.
There has however been an unusual alot of thunder around here. On storm has ended and the next one has started a day or few later.
This has been the perfect opportunity, for me, to practice my thunder recording. I still have alot of difficulties harnessing the close cracks, and Im experiencing either birds whistling, cars passing, people whining and talking, or rain. On really rare occasions, I experience them all at once.
I have promised myself, that I will get as far away as possible, from the city next time theres a storm coming.
Here are the cracks I recorded the recent days. Birds included:D
A little note. Listen at 3.33, 4.03, and 4.31. Something really strange is happening. Like a slowdown pitching of the thunder.

Here are 3 fun recordings, from the stealth recordings.

First one, is an onboard recording of a roller coaster ride.It is quite difficult not to get little not wanted sounds from the mics touching stuff, when being on such a ride.
Second one, is from the Vertigo ride. Its a plane on a stick basically:D Holding 4 passengers, who can determine tilt, and rotation, while ride is looping repeatedly.
Last one, is a walk through the park, with the mics on my bag. Funny to hear the scenery change as I passed.
